Treo Speaker Syndrome

The ear speaker on my Treo 180 died slowly over several months. I had thought it was a connection issue with T-Mobile, but testing the phone with the hands-free set clearly showed that the phone’s speaker was the problem, not the cell network.

I got a new-ish Treo 180 from my friend Scott, who doesn’t use his anymore because he switched plans. It works nicely now, and he actually did the GPRS upgrade, so I suppose I can pay T-Mobile extra money in order to win bar bets on things I can quickly look up on Google. But I don’t go to bars, and I don’t feel like paying the extra $20/month for that (especially with cell number portability right around the corner).

I did find this fix for the dead speaker, which involves prying the Treo open and doing a little soldering. Possibly I’ll experiment on my dead Treo and put it up on EBay to recoop the costs of the replacement.

The forum also have useful shortcuts, like holding down the jog dial button to redial the last number, etc.
