Google Toolbar

Happy, happy. I finally got around to installing the 2.0 version of the Google Toolbar, and two of the new features have been put to immediate use:

  • Next/Previous: if you’ve just done a search and have gone to a resulting site, you can use these two buttons to go to the next or previous search result site, instead of going back to Google for the next link. This only works on the first page of results, though.
  • Pop-up blocker: this is brilliant. Yes, it’s a perfectly functional pop-up blocker, and it’s free. It also kills Google’s competition in the advertising market: Google’s AdWords appear on the main page, not in pop-ups, and the less viable pop-ups are as a Web advertising strategy, the better. It works well, too.
  • I’ve also realized that Alt-G is the keyboard shortcut to take you to the search box on the toolbar. Also, this PCWorld article gives some tips on using Google more effectively; the drawback of Google’s elegant interface is that it’s easy to miss the more advanced functionality. I should just pick up the Google Hacks book, though it presumably hasn’t kept up with the latest Toolbar developments.
