New York City in the 1940s

Gothamist has a nice link to Charles Cushman’s photos of New York City from the 1940s. The neat thing about these photos is that they’re in color, which gives a far different view of the city than the usual black and white posters and archival photos you usually see.

The Bowling Green shots (45 through 52) are interesting, mainly because my office overlooks the area. I had no idea there was a statue where the fountain is now. And we have this photo of skyscrapers that no longer exist, or no longer stand out among the tall buildings built after the war. I guess all this can be paired up with Celluloid Skyline, a web site and book about the idea and myth of New York City’s skyscape as a backdrop to Hollywood movies. Sic transit gloria mundi.
