The answer is: Apu. I only figured it out by knowing or figuring out the words “rearmost” (like peanut gallery seats), “expiable” (not beyond redemption), and “studious” (painstaking). The third letter in each of those words is “Apu” (Slushy seller on “The Simpsons”). Sheesh. Will Shortz, as a friend of mine says, truly is a S.O.B. Have a good day.
