Social Network Analysis and Book Buying Habits

Friday, February 28th, 2003 | 11:37

This chart is interesting. This shows book buying networks based on web-based purchasing circles, i.e., when you look at a particular book, Amazon recommends books purchased by other people who have bought that book. Amazon uses this as a marketing tool; social scientists can use this to voyeristically examine people’s bookshelfs and perhaps [...]

Printable Version

Thursday, February 27th, 2003 | 09:17

Added a printable version for articles, using code found on the b2 forum. One change in that code was to add the URL for the original article, as well as generalize it so that it grabs the blog name from the configuration file, rather than having it hardcoded. Why, oh why, do people [...]

Tuesday, February 25th, 2003 | 12:57

Good news: the co-op board favors combining apartments: “We feel it enhances the value of the building as a whole while at the same time allows owners to continue to live here when their need for living space grows.”
The process works out like this:
Contract for the apartment

Apply to the co-op board, just like with any [...]

This was in response to Charles Krauthammer blaming Clinton for, well, everything that’s gone wrong with the world.
The Clinton Administration inherited a number of problems from the former Bush Administration, but didn’t spend the first [...]

Lincoln and Liberalism

Monday, February 24th, 2003 | 17:54

An article in The New Republic about the radicalism of democratic liberalism and wartime: The New Republic Online: Resolved

Tocqueville’s predictions [...]

Mortgages and such

Friday, February 21st, 2003 | 15:54

Just spoke to Washington Mutual, the current holder of my mortgage. They had someone who actually could give me information about the situation.
The type of load I need is called a blanket loan, which will cover refinancing the current apartment and taking out a mortgage on the new one. Since WaMu holds the [...]

Staten Island Refinery Fire

Friday, February 21st, 2003 | 11:00

There’s a fire on Staten Island. It appears to be an oil refinery fire near the Outerbridge Crossing in the southwestern part of the island. Here are some photos from my office building:

The window’s a bit dirty, so there might be specks in the first two photos. The sky is also hazy.
